ce qui

what

→ ce
phrase Extremely common #120
what When "what" means "that which" rather than asking a question, French splits it into two words and changes them depending on what follows. You use ce qui when "what" is the thing doing the action—meaning it goes right before a verb, with no person in between. For example, « Je comprends ce qui se passe » means "I understand what is happening," and « Dis-moi ce qui ne va pas » means "Tell me what is wrong."
FR: Je comprends ce qui se passe.
EN: I understand what is happening.
