へ

to, toward, huh?

e̞
preposition · allative Extremely common #203
to, toward While English puts words like "to" in front of a place, Japanese puts a small marker right after the place to show the direction you are heading. When used this way, へ is always pronounced "e", even though this character is usually read "he" inside words. For example, 東京 (Tōkyō) means "Tokyo", so 東京へ行きます (Tōkyō e ikimasu) means "I'm going to Tokyo."
JA: 学校へ行きます。
EN: I go to school.
