you … it; in some contexts, “you it” German main clauses often place a verb between du and es, so the words are not normally adjacent: du es kaufst (“you buy it”). The exact sequence du es occurs in subordinate clauses or after certain conjunctions, for example wenn du es kaufst (“if you buy it”), and in questions such as Bist du es? (“Is it you?”).
