what is While qu'est literally means "what is" (short for que, "what", and est, "is"), you will almost always see it as the start of the longer question phrase qu'est-ce que. Word for word, qu'est-ce que is "what is it that", which is how French normally just says "what" at the beginning of a question where English uses "what do". For example, « Qu'est-ce que tu fais ? » is literally "What is it that you do?", which simply means "What are you doing?"
