not to … anything French usually makes an action negative by wrapping ne and rien around the action word, like je ne dis rien ("I don't say anything"). However, when the action is in its basic "to do" form, both words stay together right in front of it, where English puts "anything" or "nothing" at the end. For example, dire means "to say", so ne rien dire means "to say nothing", and Je préfère ne rien acheter means "I prefer not to buy anything."

FR: Je préfère ne rien acheter aujourd'hui.

EN: I prefer not to buy anything today.
