m'être

to have … myself

→ me
phrase Extremely common #358
to have … myself This combines m' (short for me, meaning "myself") and être ("to be"). When talking about a past action you did to yourself, French uses "to be" where English uses "to have", and puts "myself" right in front of it. Because French also expresses many everyday things as actions done to yourself—like "mistaking yourself" for making a mistake—« Je pense m'être trompé » (literally "I think myself to-be mistaken") simply means "I think I have made a mistake."
FR: Je ne peux pas m'être trompé.
EN: I can't have been mistaken.
