likes Used with gustar for something that is pleasing to him, her, or you formal. Literally it works more like 'the ... is pleasing to him/her/you.' El is the masculine singular article, but in English it is often not translated with general things like foods, sports, or subjects: le gusta el ajedrez = 'he likes chess.'
