Random Words for Claude

September 2, 2026

Anshu Chimala pointed out that LLMs are incapable of randomness. LLMs cannot really choose to do something "random" as each token is soley generated based on the ones preceeding it. This is part of why every LLM-designed website looks the same.

His solution was the following prompt:

I want you to build me a landing page for my productivity app.

Follow this procedure:

  1. Generate a long, random alphanumeric string using a shell script.
  2. Define the creative direction (color scheme, layout, typography, etc.) based on the string. Look beyond the surface for subpatterns, special numbers, anything that inspires you.
  3. Use your judgment to bring this direction to life and make it look great.
  4. Don't reveal the string in the design. It's only for your inspiration.

I liked this idea, but using a random alphanumeric string seems like it wouldn't give the LLM enough "randomness". I mean, there's a sense in which literally nothing could be more random, but there's another sense in which (almost) every random alphanumeric string looks like an unintelligible sequence of numbers and letters.

To give an LLM fresh ideas, I feel like you want something between total determinism and total randomness. I thought random sentences might work nicely, and of course due to Yap I have millions of random sentences. Use the following command to grab some:

curl -s https://yap.town/grams/english.txt | sort -R | head -32

Here's an example output:

Of course, you can also use different languages. Change english to e.g. italian to get Italian words and sentences. Maybe this would be useful if you wanted to give an Italian sense of sprezzatura to your designs, or a French sense of romance, and so on!

Here's the prompt I use if you want to copy and paste:

claude
> Run curl -s https://yap.town/grams/english.txt | sort -R | head -32. That will print some random words and sentences. Can you meditate on these for a while, and try to come up with interesting connections, special patterns, or anything that inspires you?
✻ Thinking…
> Beautiful. I want to make a landing page for my spaced repetition language learning flashcards app. Can you define the creative direction (color scheme, layout, typography, etc.) based on the above? Use your judgment to bring this direction to life and make it look great.
